Bariatric Surgery (Intragastric balloon) |
The intragastric balloon system (BIG) is a ball of silicone, soft and expandable, the doctor introduces deflated through the mouth into the stomach via endoscopy under sedation. Once in the stomach is filled with a sterile saline solution, so that the balloon will be too large to pass through the intestine and float freely into the stomach.
The time involved in placing the balloon varies but is usually between 20 and 30 minutes. After this time, the doctor will check that the ball is firmly in place, allowing a few hours after, returning home. The balloon occupy partially the stomach and patients have the feeling of being "full", that is to say increases the feeling of satiety. The BIG system is designed to facilitate compliance with a supervised diet and a program of behavior modification in how to eat.
Removal of the ball is in the same way in which it was placed, that is to say via endoscopy and generally is placed 6 months and at this time the patient will have already lowered the desired weight.
