Keratoconus |
What is keratoconus?
It is the deformation and thinning of the cornea in peak shape or cone.
Why does it occur?
Its origin is congenital and usually appears on the second or third decade of life with slow deterioration of vision due to astigmatism growing.
How is it diagnosed?
Its diagnosis requires a complete eye examination, and corneal topography studies that indicate the exact location of the disturbance. May be suspected by intolerance to contact lenses.
How to correct?
Because corneal deformity, patients are not candidates for laser surgery, so they are offered the surgical alternative: intrastromal rings (Intacts) that are designed to flatten the corneal curvature to improve vision and regularize the cornea.
